The tale, set during the Civil war, is identified for its irregular time sequence, as nearly as a twisty ending (Bierce, 1948). The book is Bierces just about anthologized writing. An Occurrence at Owl Creek, according to critics, is a copiously devised explanation on the fluid of time during the civil war. The books structure, which shifts from the current to the past to what is represent to be the anticipated present, mirrors this fluidity along with the tension that which exists between competing notions of time. The second section, in the writing, i nterrupts what, at first, seems to be the ongoing flow of the execution happening in the present moment. As the minutes/ticking of Farquhars watch slows and more time elapses between the strokes, he moves into a timeless reality. When Farquhar pictures himself falling into the water, the author compares him to a vast pendulum immaterial, as well as spinning madly out of control. At this instance, Farquhar moves into a transitional space, which is neither death nor life, but a ghostly realization in a globe with its own regulations (Bierce, 1948). In the brief windowpane of time between Farquhars actual death time and the officer stepping of the plank, time slows and changes in sanctify to accommodate a comforting view of the subjects safe return to his family. Trying to blend time to his personal will is meaningless. One of the most remarkable elements in the book is Bierces sensible rendering of Farquhars alternating conception of time. The authors suggestion of time is that the nature of time is, to some level, subjective (Bierce, 1948). Time, according to the author, is even more disorienting since it turns out that all of the long accounts, as well as events, which should make water taken a lot of time happen within the marvel of a thought, took a short moment in time. Also, some of the themes discussed in Ambrose Bierces writing are as discussed earlier the fluid nature of time and the blurred line between illusion and reality. Some of the significant quotes are discussed below 1. As these thoughts, which have here to be set down in words, were flashed i nto the doomed mans brain quite an than evolved from it the captain nodded to the sergeant. The sergeant stepped aside. This line appears at the end of the first part of the story, right before Farquhar falls into his death and shows a significant turning point in the story (Bierce, 1948). The execution itself resumes in the ternary part of the story where Bierce gives details concerning Farquhars past. Following this flashback, in the second part, the writing comes back, not in truth, but in fantasy. 2.

Critical Review of Philosophical Paradigms Research Paper

Critical Review of Philosophical Paradigms - Research Paper workoutIn the 1970s and 1980s, the mixed methods access triggered a paradigm war (Tashakkori & Teddlie, 2009). Many of the research workers involved in the war sought to settle for an established rationale that would fit the combination of three-figure and qualitative methodologies in mixed methods research. The main challenge of achieving this was the fact that many of the existing paradigms governing both qualitative and vicenary methodologies seemed incompatible to be applied in a single study (Creswell & Plano, 2011). This paper will open a critical review of research paradigms used in mixed methods.Postpositivism is one of the common philosophic paradigms developed to support quantitative studies. Many postpositivists believe that reality does exist, although it exhibits itself in different sets of probabilities. Postpositivism highlights that researchers should maintain a separate distance from participants in a research. Usually, the researchers are outsiders (Christ, 2013). The reason for maintaining distance between the participant and researcher is to ensure that the study exhibits a high level of objectivity (Creswell & Plano, 2011). Researchers using postpositivism as a favored paradigm seek to gain accurate and reliable data from the participants while reducing any ready of bias. In order to minimize bias of any form, researchers prefer not to let their values or experiences influence the study in any way (Tashakkori & Teddlie, 2009). Postpositivism applies a deductive approach, which means that researchers seek to put up out a rigorous test of priory theories. Notably, the postpositivism approach may be used in the quantitative approach in a mixed method research. This is especially the case when a mixed methods approach comprises of a quantitative analysis and a qualitative analysis. Postpositivism is applicable in mixed methods research if researchers opt for the multiple par adigm approach. In

Emperor Constantine Essay Example for Free

Emperor Constantine EssayThe relationship between the man and religion is centuries old and so is relationship between the man and the God. God in m both forms nominate profoundly been capturing the hearts and souls of servicemans. In whatever phase of life this world has dartn the man into, religion has always predominated the mans life and so along with it several questions? Since, the Western worlds explorations started way back in14th Century, Christianity overly sp ingest, dug its roots in many parts of the world and spread its own interpretations about the messiah, and his teachings. soak up moreto be human is to errIt is evidently square(a) that now people have vehement belief that delivery boy was both human as well as forebode and the life of rescuer on this Earth was both of ordinary man as well as supreme neertheless this belief was non always there. It was the period between low and third century people never tried to ponder on this theological aspect o f their so ardent belief. regular Church did not have time to delve and search about this aspect as they were occupied in missionary activities and striving to protect themselves from persecutions. But the time suddenly changed when Emperor Constantine put an ultimate end to persecutions and overly gave his moral and financial support to the Church. His support bore fruit and Christians organized themselves. In the year 325 AD at the Council of Nicaea, there was a debate among the Scholars and religious lectureers. The debate was on the topic, Was the Nazarene a human or forebode?Arius, both a priest and a preacher from Alexander said that rescuer was a human unless was the first to be created by God but his opponents gave a soaked argument by saying that if Jesus had been only a common human universe bid you and me then his death and finally resurrection would never have been so powerful to redeem our sins. If it was Jesus who had to lead salvation to humans then he oug ht to be divine. The opponents won and their views and ideologues appeared in Nicaean creed, where it is written, Jesus is true God of true God, begotten, not made. (Flesher, 2003) An different debate took place at Ephesus in 431 A. D. and the topic was if Jesus was human as well as divine then how can these both natures be culminated in one? Many Christians from Abtioch in Syria said that Jesus had traits of both divine and human nature but he used it differently. For e. g. If Jesus is God, he performs miracles but when Jesus plays the role of human then he suffers like a human and died. The Christians from Alexandria argued that though these two natures were blended together but these characteristics were not of pertain measure. His divine power was more powerful as with his divinity, he had led human kind towards salvation and redemption of sins. His physical and normal human beings traits are not of much importance. These debates did not come into any conclusion. Again the Fourt h Council was held at Chalcedon 20 years later, when Bishops thought to resolve the problem by winning middle position and got into belief that Jesus was both human as well as divine and with both these natures blended, gave human beings the path of righteousness. As a human being, he got himself prone to temptation, sins but his divine power overcame his human instinct, and this divinity in him takes the humans on the path of salvation. This formulation became the basis for the Catholicism, Protestantism, and east Orthodoxy, but this belief was not adopted by every one especially Churches of Egypt, Syria, Ethiopia and Armenia. (Flesher, 2003). And the Word became kind and dwelt among us (ESV. Bible John 114). When Jesus was born, he was human being which his closest follower also said, That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of lifethe life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness (1 John 11). John established him as a human being when he conveyed that Jesus disciples saw, touched and heard Him. (The Good News Magazine, Online Edition) He also felt hunger, smart when he went on fast and fatigue too. Geza Vermes in his The Changing Faces of Jesus delve into the different facets of Jesus, victorious into consideration the letters of Paul and the Gospel of John. The author said that as soon as the first century came to an end, Christianity forgot about the real Jesus and his messages.Jesus, the religious man with an irresistible charismatic charm, was metamorphosed into Jesus the Christ, the prodigious object of the Christian religion. (Vermes, 2000) In the most polemic tone, Geza Vermes (2000) said that As a historian I consider Jesus, the primitive church and the New Testament as part and parcel of first-century Judaism and seek to read them as such rather than through the eyes of a theologian who may often be condition ed, and subconsciously influenced, by two millennia of Christian belief and church directives. Vermes consulted Gospel of John, which had endorsed the divine status to Jesus and then moved on to the Pauline letters, the book of acts and the Synoptic Gospels and said that if one goes by Synoptic Gospels, historical and Jewish religious tenor, Jesus is shown as a prophet a dedicated man, a charismatic healer and exorcist. He also said that Jesus was a teacher to preach the words of God to the people on this Earth, as the other holy men of Jewish did. He went further to say that Jesus was a Hasid, a holy man from Galilean equivalent to other holy men as Hanina ben Dosa.Jesus always said that he was the son of man and further like other Galileans. Jesus did not indulge in halakhic matters. He even said that Jesus never wanted to form a new religion, as advocated by the Early Christian churches. Even Paul also never considered Jesus as a divine being or as a historical person. For Pau l, Jesus is a redeemer of sins. He too said that Jesus was single and no one else except Jesus has left a legacy of his magical words to take the human beings out of their sins towards the path of God and true living.

Japanese product Essay Example for Free

Nipponese product EssayHistorically, it would one impossible to conduct a discussion on the issue of American interest in the culture and society of Japan without mentioning beingness warf be Two. The conflict between the two nations during the 1940s forever linked each other as the landscape of the culture of modern Japan and the modern United States were shaped from the outcome of World War Two. In that regard, the histories of the two nations atomic number 18 forever interlocked. While one would assume that such an interlocking uniting would yield a negative, the reality is that the two countries eventually opened each others minds in terms of pick out each other. Granted, there are still obstacles present to misgiving each other, but the acceptance and understanding between the two culture have been advanced do to eventual infusion of Japanese start out culture fun into the American conscious. Unfortunately, non all presentations of Japanese culture are presented wit h a pardon understanding of the basics of Japanese societal structure. Any attempt to understand the Japanese must pay off with their version of what it means to take ones proper station. Their reliance upon order and hierarchy and our faith in independence and equality are poles apart and it is hard for us to give hierarchy its just due as a possible social mechanism. Japans confidence in hierarchy is basic in her whole whimsey of mans relation to his fellow man and of mans relation to the State and it is only by describing some of their national institutions resembling the family, the State, religious and economic life that it is possible for us to understand their view of life.(Benedict) A significant causality that Japanese culture has been embraced by those in the west centers on the fact that many wad are exposed to Japanese pop culture when they are really young. The operative point here is that what people are exposed to are the more pop driven forms of Japanese ente rtainment. It is not the classics of Japanese celluloid that helps to define a consciousness in the eyes of the public. Most people are not familiar with classic films such as YOJIMBO or GATE OF HELL of KWAIDAN. What people become familiar with are the various gum anime films, manga periodicals, etc. This is not because the public looks for lowbrow entertainment as oftentimes anime and manga output from Japan is genuinely sophisticated in the storytelling techniques that are explored. Much of the reason that these forms of Japanese entertainment are so popular is that they utilize genres that travel well.In other words, regardless of which culture produces a horror comic, an action-adventure film, a sci-fi fantasy, very little is changed in terms of the mode those types of genres are constructed. A comedy, however, centers farthermost too much on a specific culture understanding of a particular biliousness to be effective. Since much of the output from Japan that reaches the United States borrows from genres that travel well, the ability for the American public to accept the Japanese product is maximized.(Actually, it is further maximized in light of the quality level of the writing that helps hook audiences) This does not mean, however, that there is a cohesion of understanding of the Japanese culture by the American audiences mainly because much of the homegr bear American entertainment that uses Japan as a backdrop generally offers a very stereotyped image of Japanese society designed to be swallowed by an American audience that has very limited knowledge of the actual culture. This can be viewed in such films as LOST IN TRANSLATION and the landmark film (in terms of providing a skewed insight into Japanese culture) sear RAIN. This is not to say that the purpose of BLACK RAIN was to present an inaccurate depiction of Japanese people. What the purpose of BLACK RAIN was, on a deeper level, was to provide a complicated scenario for the Michael Douglas c haracter to overcome the obstacles in his way in order to achieve his goal of capturing the villain. The obstacles in BLACK RAIN, however, are fairly insurmountable he is a stranger in a strange land who has difficulty functioning on his own and is compel to put his stubbornness and his prejudices aside so that he can bond with a Japanese police officer in order to achieve his objective. The character that Michael Douglas plays, however, is a complicated corrupt lone hand who is his own worst enemy. He is distrustful and keeps people at arms length. By being forced to accept help from these people who he has nothing in common with, he is able to last grow as a person.Like the character Michael Douglas plays, Japanese culture is ripe with complexity. The culture is incompatible and the way people interact with each other in Japan is far different that the way people interact with each other in the United States. While BLACK RAIN does shows these differences, it does not go beyond t he surface value of the differences to provide a more complex side of the Japanese. As such, the Japanese characters often appear one dimensional and border on stereotypes.

Morality and People Essay Example for Free

Morality and People endeavorDue to recent occurrences in history, the U. S. has found itself in various situations where serious questions have arisen about the manner that we treat our prisoners of war. The question has been posed should we torture someone if it means that we exit gain information that will protect a large number of people? A person with a utilitarian hear might suggest that because the torture would bring about the right information that would save m either people, it would be ok to torture someone. This view holds that any action is good if it is beneficial to the majority of the people voluminous in the question. Furthermore, a person who imagines in Kantian duty- found ethical motive might say that the torturing of any individual would be defective in any circumstance. A person with this type of view would retort this way because they retrieve that the result of the information being gathered from the torture would not justify the maltreat act of t orturing someone and that the act of torture is wrong because of the motive of the torturer. This is because a person who believes in Kantian duty-based ethics contends that right and wrong is not based upon the actions of the one performing the torture besides rather the motive behind the action, which would appear to be good but in reality would be wrong because of the desire to hurt another person. In addition, a person who believes in virtue ethics would question the character of the people performing the torture and determine whither the action is right or wrong based on if the person had right or wrong motives.Lastly, a person who believes in Christian-principle based ethics would argue that it is always wrong to torture people in any situation. I believe that this theory is the strongest and most appropriate. Even thought the act of torturing someone in some cases could potentially help to protect a large number of people, the fact is its wrong. I dont believe that we should fight evil with evil. Rather, I believe that there are many other options that we can sequester up in the fight against terror and evil that dont involve compromising on our values.

Construction of a runway Essay Example for Free

Construction of a lead EssayA caterpillar tread is a defined as a paved or crystalise land or strip prepared for get and take-off of a plane. Majority of the paths are built alone some are natural surfaces. Reckless construction can lead to a number of losses, place human lives at stake and even damage of property. The construction of a runway is important and move and procedures should be followed to ensure successful construction. Some of the important steps include the length of a runway and the marking and lightings. The length of a runway is manly affected by the types of plane that use the runway and the altitude. Larger aircrafts such as passenger planes require longer runways and smaller ones such as individual(a) jets can be accommodated by shorter runways. At a higher altitude these runways are designed to be longer due to the reduced density of air which decreases the engine power. If its a fully operating(a) and international airport it would require a longer runway that would accommodate the number of planes that would be ceaselessly streaming in and out. CITATION Jef l 1033 (Jeffrey Price) The markings and lightings of a runway are important since they enable operations at night or when theres low visibility. The lighting systems such as stroboscope bars or light bars are installed at the far end of the runway or synchronized flashing lights installed at each side of the runway path. These would aid the pilot in landing and help him not to sway from the main landing path. CITATION Jef l 1033 (Jeffrey Price) After full friendship and implementation of some of these procedures, one can be able to successfully construct a functional, effective and manageable runwayReference1033 Jeffrey Price, Jeffrey Forrest. Servant Leadership Essay Example for Free

Servant Leadership EssayServant loss leadership is a very unverbalized thing to accomplish sometimes due to the fact that it can be difficult to fully repose others in front of our own needs or wants. The reality is that were all self-serving to a degree because we come into this world with a self-serving heartThe journey of life is to move from a self-serving heart to a serving heart. You finally become an adult when you realize that life is or so what you give rather than what you get, (Kouzes and Posner, p. 105). iodin way to become an effective retainer leader is to watch and watch out from other servant leaders. Another way is by filming from your own personal experiences with servant leaders. One of the first person that enabled me to act as a servant leader was my mom and atomic number 91. My mom and dad keep back different servant leadership qualities. I have absorbed their qualities over the years by the example that they set for my sister and I growing up. I thin k that for my family these are qualities that have been passed push down through several generations for both on my moms side of the family as well as my dads side. The core of any family is what is changeless, what is always going to be thereshared mess and values, (Covey, 2004, p. 138).When it comes to my dad, he has always had a Win/Win attitude. The principle of Win/Win is fundamental to victory in all our interactions, and embraces five interdependent dimensions of life. It begins with character and moves toward relationships, out of which flow agreements. It is nurtured in an environment where coordinate and systems are based on Win/Win, (Covey, 2004, p.216).My dad has a very strong character and he is content with his life. I believe that he has all of the three character traits that are described in the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey. He has integrity, maturity, and abundance mentality. I think that in every situation my dad has shown the se qualities in my life and has always put others in front of his own needs, especially family. My mom has always taught me to try and see the situation from someone elses side before I react or judge someone. As you learn to listen deeply to other people, you exit give way tremendous differences in perception. You will also begin to appreciate the impact that these differences can have as people try to do work together in interdependent situations, (Covey, 2004, p.253).My mom has always been a extensive listener in her professional and personal life. She worked as a nurse practitioner for over 30 years, so she has really had to listen to people and then try in taking the information that she was given up into a diagnoses for that person. In her personal life she has always been available for me to talk to her about anything.I have never felt judged by her when I had to share something that I was proud of and she always would try to pick up my thinking on the particular situati on. She would take the information that I would tell her and analyze it and try to go through it and then she would give her advice or opinion on the matter. When I hear the phrase servant leadership, I always think of rescuer. I think he is the greatest example that we have for a servant leader. He never asked any of his followers to do something that he wouldnt do himself. Jesus embodies the ultimate example of someone who fostered coaction and strengthened individuals. A lot of people talk about Jesus as if he were a soloist. They seem to forget that a large part of his ministry was in collaboration with others, (Kouzes and Posner, p.87). Jesus served other people through his teachings and examples. He was able to build a team that work together and a sense of cartelworthiness with every member of his team.My final goal as a leader is to build trust between my coworkers and I and also to have a sense of synergy in my professional and personal life on a frequent basis. Organizat ions that seem to have trust among their employees are usually successful. It also seems that the organizations that dont frequently trust at all will not be successful and fail.I know that being any kind of effective leader take work, but I know that I have the patience to battle through the baffling times and enjoy the good and successful timeswith my teammates, whether it is my personal family or my professional family. May we learn to see people through Gods eyes and enable them to act. May we learn to commit heroes of those we lead, Im grateful that many people modeled these leadership practices for me and for you. Someday, let it also be said of us that we came alongside and helped another human being flourish in their calling, (Kouzes and Posner, p.97-98).Word regard 841ReferencesCovey, S. (2004). Arthur Millers finest work Essay Example for Free

Arthur Millers finest work EssayThe Crucible was written in 1952, and is considered to be Arthur Millers finest work not alone because of the captivating story and impressive dramatic techniques but also because of the subtle parallels it draws with the events of the time. In the USA in the 1950s, the country was terrified of communism. This prompted the McCarthy era, in which anyone suspected of holding communist views or sympathies could suffer nasty consequences, including losing their job, or being excluded from certain places. The play is set in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts during the height of the mass vehemence surrounding witchcraft. At the start of act three, Martha Corey is accused of reading fortunes. In this scene, we get a faithful look at each of the court bump officials. Both Hathorne and Parris are desperate to be part of the proceedings. Hathorne repeatedly calls for witnesses to be questioned or held in contempt, only to be ignored by Danforth. This shows th e audience that Hathornes opinions mean nothing, but it also shows us the power Danforth wields, not only oer the population of Salem, but also over his own partners. There are many moments in the play when Hathorne and Parris get ignored or defaulted by Danforth, but early on in act three Hathorne asks Giles Corey Are you gone daft, Corey? Corey replies Youre not a Boston judge yet. Youll not call me daft This shows the difference in standing between the cardinal men, as Danforth would never stand for being scolded in such a way.Reverend Parris is shown similar disrespect by Danforth, as he is continually interrupted. This is also done by Giles Corey when he cuts Parris off mid-sentence and says I am asked the question, and I am old enough to answer it. This is also the first time in the act we see Hales attitude begin to waver. When Danforth refuses to hear Coreys evidence Hale pleads Excellency, he claims to have sturdy evidence for his wifes defence. I think that in all ju stice you must- He is then cut off by Danforth.

Oceanographic Properties Essay Example for Free

Oceanographic Properties Essay oceanography is the study of the sea and maritimes. It is composed of the geologic study of the marine floor and ocean features. The geological aspects of the oceanography include carnal oceanography which is concerns with the physical attributes of the ocean irrigate for example currents and temperatures and the chemical oceanography whose main focus is on the chemistry of ocean waters. Marine biology is the study of the ocean flora and fauna. Oceanography also studies the meteorology which is the interaction amid the atmosphere and the ocean. The Indian Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, Arctic and Antarctic oceans and the Mediterranean ocean among otherwises be corporate in oceanography. Naturalists as Thompson, a Scot, and John Murray a Canadian were among the first pi onenessers to discover and study oceanography. (Johnson 2005). The composition examines some of the physical, chemical and the marine features present in the ocean s. Oceanographic Properties Physical oceanography refers to the discovery and the study of physical science and the geography of the ocean currents and water properties. The major components ar the dynamics of ocean currents on scales from centimeters to global, the ocean ramble phenomena the distribution of heat and salt and their transport through the ocean basins, the exchange of the momentum, heat and freshwater betwixt the ocean and the atmosphere, the interaction between the ocean and rivers, estuaries, ice and marginal seas. Physical geography has important coat in global climate, oceanic mixing and coastal studies and in the studies of primary production, hydrothermal vents and oceanic flux and computer memory of carbon dioxide (Robert 2005).The ocean is composed of a mixture of 97% pure water and 3% other materials examples as salts, gases, organic substances, and the undisolved particles. Pure water determines the physical properties. The ocean is measureless covering 71% of the humankind come forth of which 65 % is considered open ocean- waters that lie far away from the costal ocean. Oceans argon unalike with an averaging depth of more than two miles and containing vast life all over it even in the deepest bottoms.pelagic life is composed of two major categories the pelagic (ocean water) and the benthic (the sea floor). Pelagic is further dissever with accordance of water depth. Fig 1. 0 parts of the ocean The first 200 meters of the ocean water is called the neritic district which includes the seashore and offers abundant food for the larger animals due to the plentiful of small organisms. The ocean zone extends from 200 meters deep to the bottom of the ocean. Often the ocean zones are classified according to the kernel of sunlight they receive. The top part which photosynthetic life is found called euphotic zone while the preceding zone is the dysphotic zone where light is too dim to support photosynthesis. The aphotic zone where there isnt some(prenominal) light rays. Littoral zone is closest to the seashore covering a distance of 600 feet from the shoreline and is shared into trine zones namely the supralittoral which is submerged due to unusual luxuriously tides or during storm. The intertidal zone lies between the high and low tide lines then the sub-littoral which extends from low tide up to 200 meters.Ocean water salinity refers to the amount of salt found in the 1,000 grams of water. Majority of the salt content in the ocean comes from come but some originates from the undersea volcanoes thus the average ocean salinity is 35 grams of salt per 1,000 milligrams. An estuary refers to the height where fresh river water meets the oceans salty waters. Its salinity is different from the salinity of the ocean adjacent to it Most estuaries are found at river mouths and are thus long and narrow, resembling a channel. The water pressure increases with the increase in depth while the temperature which is the measu re of hotness or ice-coldness of an object is divided into three temperature plumb zones. ? Top layer is the surface or mixed layer and its greatly influenced by the solar system. ? The following layer is the thermocline and the temperature drops with the increase in depth, ? Then the third layer is deep-water layer and at this point the temperature decreases slowly with an increase in depth. In the ocean, the water density depends on the temperature, pressure and its salinity. For pillowcase cold salty water is denser than fresh and warm water. The density further subdivides the ocean into three layers namely, the surface mixed where the temperature and saline content differs hence no great effect on density since its in direct contact with the air. Next layer is the transition zone where water remains cold and dense and its the barrier between the surface and the bottom zone allowing little water thrust between the two zones. The bottom zone is where water remains cold and dens e.This has been illustrated by the figure 2. 0 below. Fig. 2. 0 Density layers in the ocean Ocean currents The current keeps the ocean in a continuous motion and moves large amounts of water into great distances. It is driven by wind forces, gravitational forces and tidal movement. there exists different types of current namely the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, Eats wind drift, the North and Southern equatorial currents, the Peru currents, the Kureshio current and last the Gulf Stream. They flow in gyres which are loops of water. The gyres spin in a dextrorotary direction and in the southern hemisphere they do spin in anti-clockwise direction. The currents can be illustrated in the presage 3. 0. The United States of America normally experiences the effects of the Gulf Stream currents in the Northern Atlantic zone, the equatorial current and the Canary current. Mostly affected coastlines are the Floridas East coast, North Carolina and the Newfoundland. Figure 3. 0 oceanic current s Marine biological science By looking at the ocean surface, it is difficult for one to see the great diversity of life that exists in the ocean. The ocean inhibits different kinds of flora and fauna. They include the mammals, which are animals with backbones hence they are vertebrates. They unique features is that they breath air lungs, give birth to young ones, produce milk, are warm blooded and are covered with fur. They are the seals, sea lions, walruses, the sea oter and the polar bear. Other oceanic creatures include the giant squid, angelfish coelacanth, lantern fish, gulpers whales, sharks, fishes of all kinds. Other forms of ocean features are the coral reefs.(Cone 1992) Oceanic coasts there are various types of coasts in the ocean and the beaches are only but one type. They are divided into two categories namely the primary coasts and the secondary coasts. The primary coasts were created by non-marine processes. They happen because of changes in the land, such as river de ltas or lava flows while the secondary coasts were formed by marine action and are caused by changes in the ocean, such as the creation of barrier islands or coral reefs. Geography of Latin America, European Influence Essay Example for Free

Geography of Latin the States, European Influence probeLike numerous of the other realms we tallyed most, the Latin American realm, made up of centerfield America and south America, is not a realm that was safe from European invasion. Europeans played a big federal agency in the history of the economic, political, and cultural geography of Latin America and left long-lasting evidence of their bow in the realm. Although colonization left the realm fragmented politically and economically the regions atomic number 18 showing signs of open frame the cycle of poverty and moving towards equality and urbanization. A map of the realm before Europeans would look overmuch different than it does now. On reaching the Spanish conquered the Inca of south America and continued down the western glide taking over land and exploiting the primordials and their mineral deposits. Evidence of the wealth that the Spanish gained from their exploitation can be seen in the city of Lima, whi ch soon became one of the richest cities in the world at the time. The arrival of Spanish to the sum in Middle America went much like it did in the south. The Aztecs were defeated and Amerindians were enslaved to deforest the realm for the return of the European colonizers. The deforestation started by the invaders began a devastating trend and today there is only about 10 percent of the indigenous vegetation left. Around the same time the Spanish were colonizing western southeastward America and Middle America the Portuguese had arrived in what is now Brazil and began their move westward. As the arrival of Spanish colonizers left the Portuguese with a limited work force to exploit, immoral improvisation overtake to a cultural impact that would change South America forever.Millions of African slaves were brought to the realm to work for the Europeans. most half of all of the slaves brought to the Americas arrived on the Brazilian coast and today Brazil has South Americas extens ivest African people. thrall and innate destruction arent the only things that Europeans brought to the realm. Possibly the biggest impact of colonizers was their effect on the native population. at heart years of arrival in South America an estimated 90 percent of Amazonians perished and disease in Middle America kil guide millions of Amerindians. The Amerindians were moved off much of their land into towns laid out by colonizers and forced to learn Spanish and the Roman Catholic Religion. Although Spanish and Portuguese are dominant, the native culture still survives as the majority in some areas of the realm. With such serious impacts on the culture one may be concerned about the economic disparities that exist in South America but the realm has been determine up since the independence of some major countries almost two centuries ago and economic improvement continues. straightaway the Latin American realm is in transition and shows signs of pulling out of the cycle of povert y transmittable from European colonization. Mexico has benefited from NAFTA and the Middle American Realm has successfully come together in CAFTA recently. The islands eastward check excessively developed CARICOM, leading to slow economic change in the Caribbean. Belize is transforming its economy through the turnout of commercial crops and seafood processing. By taking advantage of its pristine natural environment, Belize has been able to profit a pass around from ecotourism.Honduras, the third-poorest country in this realm, has also taken aim at ecotourism and will hopefully simulate the success of Belize because of the uncommon level of biodiversity natural to the country. Even the small-island developing economies are showing positive signs. Though many of the eastern islands have benefitted largely through tourism Trinidad and Tobago seem to have the most momentum with large militia of natural gas. As the worlds leading exporter of ammonia and methanol and the largest li quefied natural gas supplier to the United States the future looks very bright for Trinidad and Tobago. However, Industrial Development is certainly not restricted to the Central Americas. Brazil is considered one of the biggest emerging markets exporting oil, steel, and Embraer aircraft. Brazil has large oil reserves and is growing rapidly as a result it is expected to be center stage for the line of descent of the twentieth century and has been largely successful in its movement to eliminate poverty and maintain process in the process. Peru, the fifth largest producer of gold in the world, has extensive mineral deposits as well as oil reserves and a thriving fishing industry because of its extreme coastal exposure.Agriculture is also a contributor to the booming economy of Peru some of their most profitable exports include asparagus, olives, and lettuce. In genus Argentina industrial development such as better transportation and more efficient agricultural machinery has led to hi ghly profitable meat and grain production. Thanks to the riches accumulated Argentina, with 91 percent of its population urbanized, is one of the realms most urbanized countries and is even more urbanized than the U. S or Western Europe. In addition to the economic transition that most of the realm is embarking on, political purify is also on the rise. belatedly in Chile a new president was elected after two decades of the same rule party. This new leader led the country with success and made Chile the richest economy in South America. Even in Bolivia, a country with a history of harsh Amerindian mistreatment, new leadership is nationalizing the countries resources and impart to what is now being called the Amerindian reawakening.Political reform and religious reform are the biggest contributors to the growing awareness of the mistreatment of Amerindians and the decimation that occurred on European arrival and the liberation theology movement of the 1950s is an example. With Euro pean colonization having such a huge impact on the realm it is nearly impossible to tell what may have happened if they neer arrived. Almost a whole realm of people and culture were lost in years. Some of the native culture survives and lives on, in poverty, as a result of the system left behind by their oppressors. still since the end of the colonial era much progress has been made. Most countries in the realm are on their way to if not already having a strong economy. Brazil and Chile are two examples of South American success already. As the other countries continue to climb economically the countries worse off are showing signs of a better future. The future may be bright for Mexico and Belize, and hopefully the political reform and movement towards economic equality continues in Bolivia as this realm is showing strong signs that it will cudgel the major cultural and economic setbacks left over from colonial times.

Explication Of Seamus Heaneys Digging English Literature Essay

Explication Of Seamus Heaneys Digging English Literature EssaySeamus Heaneys Digging is free verse numbers about a mans observations and reflections of his get under ones skin and granddaddy and his place in the family tradition. The metrical composition is traditionally separated into golf-club stanzas, but from another viewpoint it can be separated into four parts the verbalizer, his father, his grandfather, and then the verbalizer again. This separation effectively illustrates that the poem forms a circle and at the end of that circle lays self-disco truly. There argon various poetic devices subroutined throughout the poem to effectively complete the circle and strengthen the etymon of the poem. The title of this poem is fitting because in the poem there are third generations of barbgers. The speakers father and grandfather dug up potatoes and the speaker is shaft up the past. Interestingly, the word digging is repeated three multiplication inside the poem. The for the first time stanza of the poem is about the speaker about to write something. This is illustrated by the pen in his hand resting snug as a gun. In line two, the words snug as a gun illustrate that the pen fits naturally in his hand. Also, in the simile snug as a gun the word snug if spelled backwards is guns. Further more than, the comparison of the pen to a gun, at first glance, seems bungling and makes little sense. However, when taking a moment to digest the words one can start to scoop connections. A gun is a device that relies on precision to hit its target, and the precision is reliant upon the wheeler dealer of the gun. Similarly, the pen is in need of a good writer to target ideas to put to paper. Rather than bullets, he shoots with words. In addition, the semicolon between rests and snug creates a short pause. The warrant stanza breaks from the first and begins describing things, particularly his father, outside of the path that the speaker is in. The speaker describes t he sound coming from outside his window as a clean grating sound where the words clean and rasping serve as an oxymoron to precisely describe the sound. In the second line of the stanza there is alliteration with the words spade sinks and gravelly ground. The gr- sound which is repeated has a dinero tone to it which is highly relevant to the context of the poem. The words rasping and gravelly also serve as onomatopoeia to effectively give sound to the descriptions. It isnt until line three of the stanza that the reader learns that these sounds are coming from the speakers father digging. The comma butterfly in this line creates a pause which gives the sense that digging is something his father is accustomed to doing. Also, he some(prenominal) literally and figuratively looks down upon his father. This stanza ends midsentence to create a journey through succession, which we learn to be twenty long time.Stanza three picks up midsentence, right where stanza two left off. When exa mining his fathers straining rump in line four, the speaker projects a condescending tone towards his father. The word straining also shows the reader that his fathers work is backbreaking labor. In line five, the phrase comes up twenty years away tells the reader that the speaker has transplanted himself twenty years in the past. The next line is very melodious. The long u of the word corrupt sets the tone for the rhythmical line. In the conjoining line, the repetition of the word digging at the end of the stanza creates emphasis upon that action and reinforces the bow of the poem. The fourth stanza continues on with the musically rhythmic actions from the previous stanza, but with more detail. The first line is jammed with details. The process by which his father digs is discussed tincture by step in great detail. During the step by step description the speaker uses alliteration, tall tops and buried bright to continue the musical flow started at the end of the previous stanz a. In addition, the repetitions of the words with the long u sound, such as, stooping (from the previous stanza), boot, and rooted provide reinforcement to the musical flow. In line four, the word we tells the reader that the speakers father is not alone in the potato farm, the speaker is there with his father. This also illustrates that a child in this time has close relations with his fathers work, confirming the idea that a persons livelihood will continue within the family through generations. In the next stanza, the speakers tone towards his father changes from that of the second the speaker now finds himself in care of his father. The exclamation By God, is evidence of this. The fifth stanza also introduces the speakers grandfather, an excellent digger himself. In stanza six, the descriptions switch from macrocosm about the speakers father to his grandfather. The first two lines serve as character development. The reader learns that the speakers grandfather was a very efficie nt digger and one of, if not, the best in his profession. The next line shows the admiration the unsalted speaker has for his grandfather, Once I carried him milk in a bottle, the fact that the speaker remembers the trivial project of bringing his grandfather a drink shows the respect he has for him. The next few lines shine scant(p) on the grandfathers character. He has his mind set on the task at hand and refuses to waste time doing anything else.In stanza seven, the speaker reignites his widespread use of sound. He uses the word Nicking which sounds like the spade going into the soil. Then, he uses the word slicing which has a repeating s sound and sounds like the soil is organism shape out by the end of the spade. Furthermore, he throws in the word neatly to show that the grandfather was very methodical about his work. His use of the word heaving rather than throwing or lifting describes the grandfather as being a strong person. The repetition of the word down shows that thi s is a repetitive motion that the grandfather endures for a long period of time. This stanza ends with a one word sentence, Digging. This places great importance on the word and the d and g sounds make it even more noticeable. The next stanza, stanza number eight, switches gears once again. This stanza switches back to being more about the speaker than his father or grandfather. The use of assonance with the words cold and mould The use of alliteration continues with squelch, slap, soggy, and curt cuts. There is also some onomatopoeia with the words squelch and slap. In line three of the stanza the words living roots is a metaphor for the memories that are still alive within the speaker. This also shows that he is getting back to his roots, that is, finding his identity and gaining appreciation for his family. At the end of this stanza the speaker has do a complete one hundred and eighty degree turn. He began by looking down on his father and probably his grandfather, but now he fee ls unworthy and inadequate having no spade to follow men like them. The last stanza is much the same as the first. The only differences are the punctuation and the final line. The use of a period in this stanza creates an even longer pause than the semicolon used in the first stanza. The omission of the snug as a gun simile and in its place Ill dig with it shows that he no longer compares his pen to a gun, but now compares it to a spade. This shows the journey that he has made to self-discovery. He has pride in his heritage and admiration for his father and grandfather. All three uses of digging are used on his father or grandfather it is not until the final line of the poem that the speaker digs.
